My passion for Japan and its rich culture actually came from video games. It all started when my best friend and I began playing the Yakuza games franchise (known in Japan as Ryu Ga Gotoku). At first, I was curious about understanding what the characters were saying (despite the English subtitles). However, it wasn't long before I became invested in all the places the characters were visiting, and all I wanted was to see those places myself, to see if the representations in the game were accurate (*spoiler, they mostly were!). Then I started researching and documenting myself on Japanese culture and fell in love with the Edo period (as you can probably tell by a lot of the content in this blog 😅), and started self-studying Japanese—an ongoing process. In 2025 I finally was able to visit Japan for the first time, and it was a life-changing experience that only consolidated my love for this country.
